Importing Cars From Japan to Uganda

Uganda receives most of its Japanese imports via Mombasa, then trucked through to Kampala. Older vehicles can still be imported but attract an environmental levy that scales with age.

Import rules

Right-hand drive required. Vehicles older than 8 years incur an environmental levy of 50% on CIF. Vehicles older than 15 years incur higher levies and may face restrictions on certain categories. Pre-shipment inspection (JEVIC) is recommended.

Estimated duties and taxes

Import Duty (25%), Excise Duty (varies), VAT (18%), Environmental Levy (35–50% for older units), Withholding Tax, and Infrastructure Levy. Total tax burden often 60–100% of CIF for older vehicles.

Typical transit time: 35–55 days to Mombasa, plus inland transit. RoRo is the standard option for most cars; container is recommended for higher-value units or multiple vehicles.
